How to Start a Blog in Midlife and Make Money with SiteGround
I’ve had so many friends, over the years ask me how to start a blog; so when I made the decision earlier this year to start a new blog. I’d thought it would be a good idea to document the process, so that I can show you step by step how very easy it is to start a blog, even if you have no technical experience, even if you have no online experience whatsoever.
So, before we get started, let’s go over a few things when it comes to blogging
- You can start a blog at ANY age
- You don’t need any special writing skills to start your own blog
- You CAN make money blogging
Let’s Dispel A Few Myths
Am I Too Old To Start A Blog?
Absolutely not! In fact, I think the older you are, the more you have to blog about. Think of all the life experiences you have, all the places you’ve been, the things you’ve done, the jobs you’ve had. You can start a blog about anything that you have experience in.
Do I Need to Be A Good Writer?
Are you trying to win a Pulitzer Prize? I think not. You are creating a blog. You have something you want to share. You don’t need any special writing skills or any formal education to start a blog, you only need drive, a desire and determination.

A Few Things You Should Decide On Before You Start That Blog
What Will You Blog About?
- Make sure it’s a subject that you are passionate about. If not, you’ll quickly lose interest and give up on the topic.
- When you decide on your niche, make sure you know who, you want to help, serve, or educate. Your target audience. This will make it easier for you to create blog posts. If you know who you are speaking to, then the posts will flow a lot easier, trust me on that.
- Whatever you sell, whatever you talk about, whatever you decide to blog about…stay true to your audience. Don’t sell products or services that have nothing to do with your niche.
What Will You Name Your Blog? (based on your niche)
The name of your blog should have some sort of correlation to what your blog is about. If you’re still not sure what your niche will be, you can always use your name or a variation of your name for your blog. However, keep in mind that if you have a long, difficult name to spell, then it might be better to really sit down and brainstorm on a name for your blog.
Why Your Blog Should Be Built on WordPress
Now we get down to the nitty gritty of starting your blog. Selecting your blogging platform. My top 2 favorites are Squarespace and WordPress.
Both platforms are easy to setup and easy to use and maintain on your own. However, Squarespace in my opinion is not easy to use if you want to incorporate affiliate marketing into your blog. The reason being; it requires inserting code or what’s called URL mapping in order to redirect affiliate links; with WordPress you only need to install a simple plugin and copy your affiliate link into a field.
Trust me, after creating a kick ass blog post the last thing you are
going to want to do is mess around with code on the back end of your blog, like
you’d need to do with Squarespace. Start with WordPress and you won’t regret
Here’s How You Can Make Money Blogging
There are several ways to make money blogging both directly and indirectly, here are just a few:
Selling Digital Products
One way to monetize your blog is by selling digital products. For instance, if you create a blog about freelance writing, you can create an ebook and sell it to your target audience.
Create a Course
Similar to the example above. If you have knowledge about a topic. You can create a comprehensive blog post about the topic. Then, if they want to learn more, you can direct them to a mini course that teaches them more about the topic. An online tutorial.
You can recommend products or services, and in exchange you receive a small commission for recommending the product or service on your blog. Once your reader clicks on a special link (supplied by you), you will receive a commission if they purchase the product or service through your special link.
Something else you can do to earn money from blogging. You can offer your coaching services based on your niche and charge your audience for your coaching services.
Keep in mind that your offerings should be in line with what your blog is about. Don’t start offering things to your readers that don’t fall under the same category as your blog.
