I work in Payroll which is part of the Finance Department. Every Quarter, my Company has what they call a status update meeting. At these meetings, they discuss the financials, plans for the future, things of that nature. At the end of these quarterly meetings, they open the floor up for questions.
Right before the Q&A starts, they assemble chairs on the stage and the important people in Finance take a seat in these chairs.
What irks me about these quarterly meetings is that when it comes to Q&A time, the Chairs onstage are filled with Men. White Men.
To top it off, most of the questions from the audience, are from men.
The questions range from are we getting bonuses this year to, what’s your advice for moving up in the Company.
When a woman dares to stand up and ask a question about getting ahead, I always cringe, roll my eyes, and think to myself.
“Girl, why bother asking these men anything career-oriented. Do you see any women sitting up there on that stage?”
Have a seat. There is nothing THESE men can tell a woman about what it takes to get ahead in this Company. Nothing.
What I find even more disturbing about these Q&A sessions is that there ARE women in Executive Financial roles at the Company.
Some of the women executives outrank most of the men sitting on that stage, and yet; they are not part of the Q &A.
This table is filled with men. It is a brotherhood.
When men move up the ladder, they reach back and pull another man up with them.
Sadly, when a woman moves up the ladder, she spends most of their time trying to convince the men at the table that she deserves a seat.
It’s horrible to watch. Men in the workplace stick together. Women do not.
For my sisters out here, that are tired of being overlooked. My sisters who work their asses off day after day and yet when it comes time for a raise or a promotion, you get overlooked.
I’ve got news for you. It’s time to plan for your financial future.
You don’t have to go on like this. You can start a side hustle business and earn enough money to eventually quit that dumb ass job.
That’s my goal. That’s what I’m working towards. You can do it too.
If you want a seat at the table, you need to bring your own chair.
Better yet, screw the seats. Build your own damn table, and fill YOUR seats with people who respect, admire, and trust you and your abilities.
Create. Your. Own. Business.
Oh, my sisters, I can hear your excuses now:
“A side hustle? Who has time for that?”
“I can barely make it through a normal workday”
“Girl, you trippin,” I don’t know nothin bout starting no damn business”
You have time. Weekends are wonderful. I’ve done it.
I’ve been where you are. I hated Sundays because it meant I had to go back to work on Monday.
Oh, and when Monday morning rolled around, I usually hit the snooze button at least 3 times before I stumbled out of bed.
Then I would get dressed, take the 1-hour bus ride to work, sit in my cubicle and think “I’m better than this”.
Thank GOD it’s not like that for me anymore. I have a business that I’m passionate about. A business that I know will eventually replace the income from my Corporate Gig.
When I go to work now. I’m counting down the days to when I can finally say goodbye to this Corporate Fallacy.
I am tired of working hard to make someone else rich! It’s ridiculous.
I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT MY BUSINESS AND HELPING OTHER MIDLIFE WOMEN
I hope you notice that I am encouraging you to start a business. Not a hobby. Not a one-off. A B-I-Z-N-E-S-S.
Did you know that women own four of every 10 U.S. businesses?
Stop standing on the sidelines thinking that change is going to automatically happen. No girlfriend, that’s not how it works.
As scary as it is, you MUST take the first step.
It won’t be easy; you will have to put in the work. But think about what you will gain in the end.
I know you’ve been thinking about starting your own business forever. It’s go time girl.
